If you do not like the idea of seeing your child sitting around this winter watching television or playing video games, you can sign them up for some activities. One activity they may enjoy is gymnastics. This is done inside, and some parts can be practiced at home. If you think your child would like this type of activity below is information you should find helpful:

Beginning Gymnastics

If your child has never done gymnastics before they will start out very slowly. This is important as this can be dangerous to do especially if they are not taught in the right way.

The instructor will first start your child out with learning how to do a basic handstand and then a cartwheel. Once they learn these two things, the instructor may teach your child how to do a round-off.

If your child is still interested at this point, they will move on to harder exercises, such as learning how to do a backbend and then a backflip.

It is important that the class has enough instructors as someone always needs to be right next to your child when they are doing the harder flips. Good mats should be used to cushion their falls.

The instructor will determine your child's skill level and how far they can go with their training.

Types of Leotards

Your child will need a leotard to wear during their class. There are a variety to choose from, and it can become overwhelming. To help get you started, first look at the fabric.

Your child will be drawn to the metallic fabric as this material is shiny and bright. This is not the best fabric for them, however. The fabric does not stretch much, which makes it uncomfortable to wear while your child is doing their tricks.

Another fabric that would work well for your child's leotard is Lycra. This fabric stretches enough and will be comfortable for your child to wear.

Nylon is another option. This looks and feels much like Lycra, so it is a personal choice of what you would like best for your child.

Consider long sleeves, show sleeves, open back, and closed back. If your child gets hot easily, short sleeves with an open back will work well.

No matter what you choose, you will find leotards in a variety of colors and styles. Let your child choose a few leotards so they can make a change when they get bored with one style.

Talk with the gymnastic instructor if you have more questions about the class and the type of leotards the children wear.
