When you take a vacation to a beach area, one of the activities that you may have available to you is surfing lessons. Some vacationers figure that taking surfing lessons would be silly because they'll have to return home before they even get a chance to learn that much. And this is a rational opinion to have. However, it is also an opinion worth pushing back on a little because taking surfing lessons on vacation can still have some benefits, even if you can only squeeze a few lessons in.

1. You'll gain an appreciation and awareness of how the ocean moves and flows

One of the first things you will learn in your surfing lessons is how to feel the ocean and move with its waves. This is a skill that's necessary in order for you to properly pop up on the board and ride the wave. You can get a pretty good feel for the ocean in just a lesson or two, and this feel will benefit you even if you don't surf very much afterwards. You'll feel more in tune with the water even when you're just swimming, floating on the water, or bodyboarding. Not only can this make your water experiences more interesting, but it can keep you safer. You're less likely to get pulled out or under the water when you know how the water moves.

2. You'll feel more informed when watching surfing

You may never surf again after your vacation lessons, but you might watch some surfing on TV! Having taken a few surfing lessons, you will have a much better idea of what's going on. You'll also have a greater appreciation for the talent and skill that the surfers actually have, which can make surfing more fun to watch.

3. You'll have fun

Taking surfing lessons is simply fun. You get to spend a few hours on the water. You'll get amazing exercise, and you'll get to meet some pretty cool surf instructors. Who says you have to keep surfing forever or take 30 lessons in order to enjoy a sport? If you want, you can just enjoy these beginner surfing lessons for what they are and treat them as a source of entertainment on your vacation.

Even if you only have time to take one or two surfing lessons while on vacation, it can be a great thing to do. If it sounds fun, go for it — you're allowed to do something purely for fun, after all.
